Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That
Each time a prominent honors show nears, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
