Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline including angels, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Revealing details for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of characters who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might appear out of place, but the developments of the latest installment show why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the party understands precisely where to go next after a intense first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated the foes for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, attacking the character, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, wants vengeance.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to kill the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the team reach locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter vowed a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them few options but to travel to the northern region in search of Casimir.

What’s Next?

According to episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which players will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
